Description
Fibrosis is a common pathophysiological response of tissues and organs to adverse/pathologic conditions. Fibrosis directly contributes to the mortality and morbidity associated to a great number of diseases, and effectively improving its management is a most relevant clinical challenge.
To reduce the burden of fibrosis, systematic and sustained actions to promote scientific research on fibrosis in different organs at the highest possible level are necessary. To tackle this objective, continuous analysis of the similarities and differences existing in the onset and progression of fibrosis in different organs is highly advisable. Indeed, this strategic approach facilitates the identification of novel, common cellular and molecular targets to treat fibrosis, what in turn might be instrumental to the repurposing of drugs. Moreover, the study of the particular traits that characterize fibrosis in different organs could be key to develop more specific, accurate anti-fibrotic treatments, therefore allowing us to transit towards a personalized medicine context.
In order to create this research network we have assembled a multidisciplinary consortium of nine partnering scientific basic and clinical teams from all Spain (CSIC-CBMSO, Madrid; CSIC-IIBB, Barcelona; Hospital Clínic de Barcelona; Universidad de Alcalá de Henares; Universidad de Cantabria-IBBTEC; Universidad de Málaga; Universidad de Santiago-CIMUS; ) to gather a critical mass of researchers interested in studying the mechanisms that underlie fibrosis, and hope to foster our understanding on this pathologic process and to suggest novel therapies to critically improve fibrosis clinical treatment.
